DESIGNING PRODUCTS THAT PUT PEOPLE, ANIMALS AND THE PLANET FIRST.
CHOICES ARE POWERFUL
What materials we choose to create our products, where they come from, how we treat people and animals… it all matters.
We’re on a mission to use lower-impact materials across our product range and put people, the community and the planet first. Our Sustainable Product impact area is also all about helping you to love your wardrobe for longer - one of our six approaches to circularity.
Princess Polly is a participant of the United Nations Global Compact, and has aligned our Earth Club mission with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Within our Sustainable Products impact area, we are focused on two Sustainable Development Goals where we believe we can best contribute to:
DEMAND DRIVEN FASHION
At Princess Polly, we've helped pioneer a new fashion manufacturing model that we call Demand Driven fashion. Typically, the fashion industry orders products 6 months to a year in advance, without knowing what will sell and how much inventory to keep. This leads to unwanted, wasted stock.
With our close factory relationships, we are able to produce products with a short lead time of 3-6 weeks. This allows us to manufacture our products in small quantities based on customer demand, and avoid the environmental burden of overproduction. We aim to use our Demand Driven fashion model, combined with lower impact, more sustainable materials to produce the best overall outcome for our planet.
MADE FROM MATERIALS THAT DON’T COST THE EARTH
The way we make our clothes matters. The fabrics, materials and colors used to make your ‘fit contributes to its overall environmental impact. How do we know that our Earth Club materials are actually better for the planet? Don’t worry, you don’t have to take our word for it, we have third party certifications to ease your mind.
- The organic materials in our Earth Club range (cotton & linen) are certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard and Organic Content Standard
- The recycled materials (such as nylon & metal) are also certified by the Global Recycled Standard and Recycling Content Standard
Being sustainable shouldn’t mean it costs more. Our mission has always been to make on-trend fashion accessible. As we continue to produce more lower impact products, we are committed to keeping our pricing the same where possible.
A fully certified Earth Club item must be created with at least 70% lower-impact materials and our blended Earth Club items must contain at least 40%. So, not just any item can wear the sustainable tick of approval!
So, what exactly are these materials and why are we so hyped about them?
ORGANIC MATERIALS are grown using less water and without the use of harmful pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers.
RECYCLED MATERIALS reuse existing fabrics and plastics to prevent unnecessary waste to landfill and give used materials a second
WATER BASED PU is created using only water-based solvents that are kinder to our planet.
FOREST FRIENDLY MATERIALS are materials made from wood (or trees?), using innovative technologies that preserve natural resources
CUTE FASHION, MINUS ANY CRUELTY
We love animals, which is why we’re super serious about animal cruelty. We’re a Fur Free Retailer and have worked with Four Paws, a global animal welfare organization, to prepare our Animal Welfare Policy. Our animal welfare policy sets out our expectations around animal welfare for our employees and suppliers, and covers the animal derived materials we ban and allow, animal testing, and the inclusion of animals in our marketing.
For the animal materials that we do still work with, we require suppliers to practice good animal husbandry, and adopt the Five Freedoms of animal welfare by the Farm Animal Welfare Council. Currently, less than 1% of Princess Polly’s products are derived from animal products, and by 2023 all our apparel will be vegan by phasing out wool, leather and silk. We’ve already launched a Vegan Edit, where all the Princess Polly products are Peta-Approved Vegan.
You’ll never find these animal materials in our products:
THE FIVE FREEDOMS:
CARING FOR OUR CLOTHES
At Princess Polly, we’re proud that our garments are made from high quality materials – which means that with a bit of TLC, attention to the labels and some smart laundry hacks, you can keep your fav pieces looking fresh and fab, season after season (the planet will thank you, too!).
To help you care for your Princess Polly pieces correctly and sustainably, we’ve created the Princess Polly Care Guide below, as well as a more in-depth post on our blog.
